Amal

The Gueliz neighborhood of Marrakech is a network of pleasant tree-lined lanes, where one can easily become disoriented due to the odd angles at which the streets intersect. But if one is not in a hurry, getting lost can lead to unanticipated discoveries!

It took some persistence and a careful study of a Google map to locate a unique restaurant in this neighborhood named Amal. In addition to being a pleasant restaurant, it is also (and perhaps primarily) a non-profit association which trains disadvantaged women in cooking and business skills. Their motto is "Good Food for a Good Cause", and it is!

In addition, they have Moroccan-cooking classes every day at 10 AM, which includes lunch at noon. It was started a few years ago by an American-Moroccan woman, and it appears to have been a great success! The menu is simple, usually offering a choice of the traditional Tajine (beef, chicken or vegetarian) or broiled fish. We went during Ramadan, when they were open briefly for lunch, but normally, they serve from 12:00 to 4:00 PM.
