At the Youth Center, there were no art supplies whatsoever, so Peace Corps donated some sets of colored pencils and a pack of pale -green office paper. We brought our own eraser to the class, and many children used it frequently to get a particular shape or line just right.
One boy brought his own set of watercolors, but he was definitely an exception (he plans to be an artist).
To get the group started, we presented some typical themes: draw what will you be when you grow up, draw your neighborhood, draw your home and family, etc. The results were imaginative and remarkable... and there was no hesitation on their part... they had definite ideas and put them on paper! To add a language component, we asked them to label things in English... they one-upped us by labeling things in French and Arabic, and then added the English word with a little help.
