The second assignment of the workshop was to distinguish between the circle and the sphere by making what was essentially a paper mosaic. The object was to create the illusion of three dimensions by using shading and shadow. We posted a photo of an ancient Roman mosaic depicting a fish, in order to show how the image can be composed of many small fragments. Comparisons to the modern work of Chuck Close will come later! What impresses us is that the students have a strong idea of the color they want to use, and no matter if there are fragments of advertising attached. These word scraps enliven the composition, but they also remind the viewer of the recycling potential of disposable material.
