Sixth Session

For the sixth session, we gave the participants a choice of topic.  We asked them to either 1: choose one image of Morocco they would send to a person who had never been here, or 2: portray one thing in their life they would like to change.  This latter option caused some confusion... perhaps the Moroccan culture is less concerned with "what ifs" than our culture is. Some of the collages strayed from the assigned topics, but we accept and appreciate their initiative, as our goal is to have the students make the connections between verbal and visual expression.

Despite the crowded facility, students share the scissors, glue stick, and will even help one another find a certain image (as in: " here is a photo of a cat for you, but I want that blue sky back"). We continue to be amazed by the focus and imagination they bring to their work!

Some of the scrap paper is from old Peace Corps AIDS awareness calendars.  This may have inspired one student to do this strong graphic image using the child wearing a red AIDS-awareness ribbon. We were watching her assemble this image, and she was extremely particular about each color and shape. The arrangement of hand-cut letters is perhaps the most impressive thing bout this collage... the way the letter P drops down to balance the two unequal line lengths.  She is a certainly a natural graphic artist!

This student decided to portray the three elements of Morocco: the interaction of mountains, water and agriculture.  The near-symmetry of this simple image has an iconic quality. The blue band representing the river extends farther than the other elements, suggesting movement and flow.
